Due to the annual festival of the Meleagris gallopavo (that's Thanksgiving to you), the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce is having their usual Business PM one week early this month, on the Third Thursday! Since the Chamber is super cool, BASE will be joining their party for our November Third Thursday.

One step in doing this: connecting people. Friday Night sizzle, I imagine, will be kind of like BASE. No expectations or agenda. Just cool people thinking up cool ideas.

BASE Third Thursday: January 15th at Gus'

Monthly Third Thursdays are back! Each month in '09 we'll meet in the evening on the Third Thursday of the month at a restaurant, coffee shop, bar or anyplace where it's fun and easy to just show up. The purpose? To hang out. This month, we're heading to Gus' in Coralville.

What: BASE Third Thursday
When: Thursday, January 15, 7 p.m. (We'll traditionally meet around 5:30 p.m., but we're making an exception this month).
Where: Gus' Food & Spirits, 2421 Coral Court, Coralville
Why: To hang out

Gus' has a little of everything! It's a sport bar with a 2,000 sq ft game room, which is where we'll be hanging out. Show off your skills at pool, shuffleboard, bags, darts and the Big Buck Hunter, Golden Tee and Silver Strike Bowling arcade games. If that's not enough to convince you, how about $1.75 domestic pints and Captain Morgan drinks and a $6.99 Chicken Parmesan dinner special? Still not sure about coming? Happy New Year! So, the Hawkeyes won - go Hawks!

...But have you really gotten the excitement that is college football out of your system, not to be seen again for another eight months?

If not, BASE has a two-fer for you! In the spirit of aiding the slumping auto industry, we're going to do our part by celebrating the GMAC Bowl at the 2nd Annual Bad Bowl Party!

Yep, it's those titans of the gridiron, Ball State and Tulsa, squaring off in the 10th bowl dedicated to better car loan finance everywhere. The game is Tuesday, January 6th at 7:00 in the car oil metropolis of Mobile, AL.

BASE will do its part to bail out the economy by GMAC-ing it up at The Edge in Coralville. Come enjoy another great bowl game, good food and the company of fellow BASErs! They'll be holiday stories, trivia, and the AFLAC duck. Make sure to show your Cardinals or Golden Hurricane pride by dressing in your team colors and learning your fight song!

Game night at Critical Hits was awesome, and NOT just because I won the werewolves game. Yes, you were right to be suspicious of me. I was killing all your villagers. Hey, I just do what the cards tell me.

Thanks to those who came early to plan for '09. Here's what we decided:

Monthly Third Thursdays are back! Each month in '09 we'll meet in the evening on the third Thursday of the month at a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, anyplace where it's fun and easy to just show up. The purpose? Just hang out. We may even try to get a voting system set up on the website so you can vote each month on where we go. We'll let you know the place by blog and e-mail.

Speaking of the website: We will have a new one up January 1. McKinze is working on this but if you want to help, let her know. Getonbase@iowacityarea.com.

What else? We still want to do other random things like: bad bowl game parties, ringing the bell for salvation army, Kernels baseball games, bonfires, game night, open rehearsals with hip string quartets, etc. How? The Sky's the Limit!

Hi! I’m Jenna and I’m fairly new to BASE, although I’ve only been able to make it to a few events.

Another group that I’m in is having their own event that I thought would be great to invite everyone in BASE. You can contact me about tickets jenna.kerdus@jostens.com or get them the night of the performance!

On Saturday, October 25th, join the Gutsy Women’s Tour group as the prepare to go on the trip of a lifetime to anywhere, after all, The Sky’s the Limit! This show features the Metro Mix Chorus, a nation-wide competition Sweet Adeline group, strutting their stuff through songs from the Big Band Era all the way up to Barry Manilow and the Pointer Sisters. Our special guests will be the Coe College singing troupe, Crimson and Gold.

Tickets are just $15 for adults ahead of time or $18 at the door. The show will be taking place at the City High Auditorium starting at 7:00 pm. There is one show only! Any proceeds will go towards helping the chorus go to the International Harmony Classic in Nashville, Tennessee for 2009!

Taste some wine...for a cause!

Sorry I missed last night. I've been remiss in not getting this posted sooner, but I want to invite you all to a fun event for a service group LaShelle and I are a part of.

It's a wine tasting event for HOBY (Hugh O'Brien Youth leadership). The group hosts a leadership seminar for high school sophomores every spring. Long story short, it's a good service group run by volunteers that's deserving of a little donation... To the fun part:

The Wine Tasting will be on Saturday, October 18 at the Wallace Winery in West Branch from 7-9 PM. The cost is $20. Please join a fun group of world-shakers for a nice Saturday evening sampling one of Iowa's local wineries!

Hello BASE!

I'm Nicole, and I wanted to invite you to consider making Riverside Theatre a place you play! What's Riverside Theatre? (I'm so glad you asked.) RT is the only resident, professional, non-profit theatre company in Iowa City. We make it a priority to provide engaging, intimate and thought-provoking professional theatre for our audience. This hilarious show is set in a picturesque Irish village overrun by a big budget Hollywood film crew. Actors Tim Budd and Jim Van Valen play Charlie and Jake, two of the locally hired extras, and uproariously bring to life a cross section of other characters from this celebrity-crazed hamlet including the self-centered American star of the movie, the quirky crew and some pretty eccentric townsfolk. But when a stone on the path to the American dream leaves one boy broken, they find themselves at a bittersweet turning point. Stones in His Pockets opened on September 5 and has a run of 8 more performances until September 28.

As promised, here are further details about our two ways of playing with a purpose in August:
BASE Extreme Makeover: Flood of 2008 Home Edition

Many volunteers participated in sandbagging our city when help was needed most. Those efforts saved many homes and businesses from the Flood of 2008. But as we all know, not all.

That’s where we come in! Partnering with the United Way of Johnson County Volunteer Center, we have arranged to volunteer to help a neighbor in need rebuild their life. Every inch adds up to miles.

BASE is hoping for a group of 8-10 (or more!) volunteers to help an individual or family in a flood-affected neighborhood on Thursday, August 14, 2008, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. That’s where you come in.

Flexibility is key, so please be ready to do any of the following, or a combination of the following tasks when you show up: de-sandbagging (unlikely, but possible), home gutting / drywall removal, debris removal, landscaping or general cleaning.

Wear your work boots (or shoes you don’t mind getting VERY dirty), a shirt with as much protection you feel necessary (tank tops may not be your best option - long sleeves are), jeans you don’t mind ruining, and work gloves. A shovel, rake, sledgehammer, or a small tool kit, if you have them, may be helpful to bring along.

Kernels BASEball, Round Two

The water shut us down once, but there's still plenty of life in this hot summer of 2008, so let's make like Harry Carry and holy cow! - have some fun at a ballgame! Join your BASE teammates for a night of cheering on the Cedar Rapids Kernels (or just enjoying a night at the ballpark, if you're not quite a Kernels enthusiast). We're putting together a trip for the game on Tuesday August 19. Here are the details:

Tuesday, August 19
Gates Open at 6:00pm
Game Starts at 7:00pm

There are plenty of tickets available in the Club seating area, which are $8 a piece - what a steal! Also, it's Triple Play Tuesday, so you can buy a combo of a burger or hot dog, a soda or beer, and a chips or popcorn for $6 all game.

We're going to try and put this together this week, so if you want to attend please RSVP to getonbase@iowacityarea.com and let us know how many tickets you'd like (we'll settle up at the game) and if you would like to carpool/volunteer to drive a carpool.

What: BASE and Access Iowa unite to get "it" done

When: Friday, July 25/ 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Where: Cabo Bar & Sports Grill, 2730 Edgewood Rd SW (corner of Wiley and Williams Blvd.), Cedar Rapids

BASE and Access Iowa are partnering to celebrate and network with young persons, especially after the flood. Our two groups will be attending Uptown Friday Nights in Cedar Rapids to connect with friends and new friends across the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Area.

Uptown Friday Nights is an outdoor concert series featuring area bands, live music, food and ice cold beverages. Admission is $5, which includes the first drink for the first 500 guests. We'll meet in front of the entry gate (the sand volleyball pits) to Uptown Friday Nights at Cabo Sports Bar and Grill at 5:30 p.m. If you anticipate arriving after that time, feel free to call one of the point people to locate us in the crowd.
